Polarised lenses are the single biggest upgrade you can make to your fishing eyewear, but "polarised" gets used as a marketing word almost as often as it's used accurately. Here's what actually makes a difference on the water.
What Polarisation Actually Does
Light reflecting off a flat surface — water included — becomes polarised, meaning the light waves vibrate predominantly in one direction (usually horizontal when reflecting off water). This is what causes glare. A polarising filter is built to block light vibrating in that direction while letting other light through, which cuts the surface glare dramatically and lets you see beneath the surface instead of just seeing a mirror of the sky. Ordinary tinted sunglasses reduce overall brightness but do nothing about this — they make glare dimmer, not gone.
Lens Colour: It's Not Just Aesthetic
Lens tint changes contrast and colour perception, and different tints suit different water and light conditions:
- Grey/green: Reduces overall brightness with the least colour distortion — a solid all-purpose choice, especially in bright offshore conditions.
- Amber/brown/copper: Increases contrast, which helps with spotting fish and structure against variable bottom colour — a common choice for sight fishing in estuaries and flats.
- Yellow: Boosts contrast further in low light (overcast, dawn, dusk) but isn't suited to bright sun, since it lets through more overall light.
- Blue/silver mirror coatings: A reflective coating added on top of a base tint to cut additional brightness in intense offshore glare — more about comfort in very bright conditions than about seeing fish.
There's no single correct colour — the right one depends on where and when you're fishing more than it depends on brand.
Lens Material: Glass vs Polycarbonate vs Nylon
Glass offers the best optical clarity and scratch resistance, but it's heavier and more fragile if dropped or knocked — a real consideration around boats, rocks, and tackle. Polycarbonate is lighter, more impact-resistant, and generally more affordable, at some cost to long-term scratch resistance and marginally lower optical clarity. Nylon (used in some higher-end sport lenses) sits between the two on weight and clarity, with good impact resistance. For most anglers, polycarbonate is a sensible practical choice given how often sunglasses get dropped, sat on, or knocked against gear.
UV Protection Is a Separate Spec From Polarisation
Polarisation cuts glare; it doesn't automatically mean full UV protection. Check specifically for 100% UVA/UVB protection (sometimes listed as UV400) — this is a distinct, and arguably more important, safety spec than polarisation itself, particularly given how much time serious anglers spend in direct sun and reflected glare off water, both of which increase UV exposure to the eyes.
Frame Fit and Coverage
A frame that lets light in around the edges — from above, below, or the sides — undermines the benefit of good lenses, since stray light and glare can still reach your eyes indirectly. Wraparound styles with closer facial coverage perform better on open water where glare comes from multiple angles, not just straight ahead. Fit also affects whether they'll actually stay on: a loose fit that needs constant readjusting gets left in a tackle box rather than worn.
How to Tell If a Pair Is Actually Polarised
Not every pair labelled "polarised" performs equally, and mislabelling does happen at the budget end of the market. A simple test: look at a reflective surface (a car windscreen, still water, a glass tabletop) through the lenses and rotate the glasses roughly 60 degrees. Genuinely polarised lenses will show a noticeable change in glare intensity as you rotate them; lenses with no real polarising filter won't change at all.
What's Worth Paying For
The two things that most reliably separate genuinely good fishing sunglasses from mediocre ones are lens optical quality (clarity, lack of distortion at the edges) and polarisation performance — not the frame branding. If you're deciding where to spend, prioritise a well-reviewed lens over a well-known logo, and make sure UV protection is explicitly stated rather than assumed.
