Sleeping Pads: The Most Overlooked Item in Every Camping Kit

Most campers invest heavily in sleeping bags and use whatever pad came with a previous kit. This is backwards. Here is why the pad matters more than most people think.

A great sleeping bag on a poor sleeping pad still means a cold, uncomfortable night — heat loss to the ground is often underestimated compared to heat loss to the air. Here's what actually determines whether a pad works for your conditions.

R-Value: The Number That Actually Matters for Warmth

R-value measures a pad's resistance to heat flow — in practical terms, how well it insulates you from the cold ground beneath you. Higher R-value means more insulation. As a general guide for Australian conditions:

  • R-value around 1–2: Warm-weather use only — mild coastal summer nights. Inadequate once temperatures drop toward single digits.
  • R-value around 3–4: A sensible three-season range for most of the year across temperate parts of Australia, including cooler nights in shoulder seasons.
  • R-value 5+: Needed for genuine alpine or winter conditions — Victorian and Tasmanian high country in winter, or any trip where overnight temperatures drop well below freezing.

R-values from different pads are additive if you layer pads (a closed-cell foam pad under an inflatable, for instance), which is a genuine strategy for extending warmth in serious cold without needing a single very high R-value pad. Manufacturers have moved toward a standardised testing method in recent years, but it's still worth checking whether a specific R-value is independently tested or self-reported, since real-world performance can vary between brands quoting similar numbers.

Pad Types

Closed-cell foam pads: No inflation needed, virtually indestructible, and cheap, but bulkier to carry and generally less comfortable than an inflatable pad due to less cushioning thickness. A reliable backup or complementary layer even if it's not your primary pad, since foam can't puncture or fail the way an inflatable can.

Self-inflating pads: Open-cell foam inside an airtight shell that partially inflates on its own when the valve is opened, with a few breaths needed to fully firm it up. Generally more comfortable and better insulating than closed-cell foam for a given thickness, at a higher weight and cost, and a puncture is a genuine risk to manage with a repair kit.

Air pads (no foam, fully inflatable by mouth or pump): The best warmth-to-weight and pack-size ratio, and the best comfort-to-weight ratio, which is why they dominate the lightweight backpacking market. The trade-offs are a real risk of puncture, some fabric noise (crinkling) on cheaper models, and the practical hassle of needing to inflate and deflate them fully each use — not a concern for car camping, but worth factoring in for a long trekking day when you want to set up and pack down quickly.

Puncture Risk and Repair

For any inflatable pad, always carry the repair kit that came with it, or a generic pad repair kit, and know how to use it before you need it in the field. A groundsheet or footprint underneath the pad reduces puncture risk from sharp ground debris and also protects the pad's underside from abrasion over repeated trips. Test a new pad by inflating it at home and leaving it overnight to check it holds air before relying on it in the field.

Thickness and Comfort

Thicker pads generally sleep more comfortably, particularly for side sleepers who need enough cushioning to keep hip and shoulder pressure points off the hard ground beneath. This is a genuine, separate consideration from R-value — a thin pad can have a high R-value (good insulation) while still sleeping uncomfortably for a side sleeper due to inadequate cushioning. If you're a side sleeper, prioritise thickness alongside R-value rather than assuming R-value alone tells you how comfortable a pad will be.

Packed Size and Weight

For car camping, packed size and weight barely matter — prioritise comfort and durability. For backpacking or multi-day hunting trips where you're carrying everything, weight and packed volume become genuinely significant, and this is where the trade-offs against comfort and puncture resistance become real decisions rather than just numbers on a spec sheet.

What to Actually Prioritise

Match R-value to the coldest conditions you're realistically likely to encounter on the trip, not the average expected temperature — a cold snap or unexpectedly high-altitude campsite can catch out a pad chosen only for typical conditions. Beyond that, the choice between foam, self-inflating, and air pads comes down to how much weight and packed size matter for your specific trip type, and how comfortable you are managing (and repairing) a puncture risk in exchange for better warmth-to-weight performance.
