A sleeping bag's temperature rating is one of the most misunderstood specs in outdoor gear — the number on the tag rarely means what buyers assume it means. Here's how ratings actually work and how to apply them to Australian conditions.

Comfort Rating vs Lower Limit: Two Very Different Numbers

Modern sleeping bags tested to the EN 13537 / ISO 23537 standard carry two separate temperature figures, and manufacturers don't always make clear which one they're advertising prominently:

  • Comfort rating: The temperature at which a standard reference sleeper (defined as female in the standard) can sleep in a relaxed position without feeling cold.
  • Lower limit rating: The temperature at which a standard reference sleeper (defined as male in the standard) can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking from cold — a genuinely more marginal, "just survivable comfortably" threshold, not a comfortable-sleep threshold.

Many product listings lead with the lower limit figure because it's the more impressive-looking (lower) number, and buyers commonly assume it's the comfort rating. A practical rule of thumb: if only one number is given and it isn't specified which rating it is, treat it as the lower limit and add a genuine margin — several degrees — to estimate your actual comfortable-sleep temperature, particularly if you sleep cold.

Individual Variation Matters More Than the Standard Admits

The standard uses reference sleepers in specific clothing and sleeping conditions; real people vary significantly in how cold they sleep, independent of the standard's assumptions. If you know you tend to sleep cold, buy for a lower rating than the trip's expected minimum temperature suggests you'd need — this is cheaper and more reliable than trying to compensate with extra clothing layers inside a marginal bag.

A General Guide for Australian Conditions

Actual overnight temperatures vary enormously by region, season, and elevation, so treat this as a rough starting framework rather than a precise prescription — always check the specific forecast and typical overnight lows for your actual destination and dates:

  • Mild coastal or summer conditions (roughly 15°C+ nights): A bag with a comfort rating around 5–10°C or higher is generally adequate.
  • Cooler shoulder-season or higher-elevation conditions (roughly 5–15°C nights): Look for a comfort rating around 0 to -5°C.
  • Genuine alpine or winter conditions (below freezing overnight): A comfort rating of at least -10°C, and colder for high alpine winter camping, becomes important — this is where the gap between a lower-limit rating and a true comfort rating matters most, since being wrong in genuinely cold conditions is a safety issue, not just a comfort one.

Down vs Synthetic Fill

Down offers a better warmth-to-weight ratio and compresses smaller for a given warmth level, which is genuinely valuable for backpacking or multi-day trips where pack weight and space matter. Its major weakness is that insulating performance collapses significantly when down gets wet, since wet down clumps and loses the loft that creates its insulating air pockets. This makes it a stronger choice for dry alpine conditions and a genuinely riskier choice for humid coastal or wet-season conditions unless paired with a highly water-resistant shell and careful moisture management.

Synthetic fill is heavier and bulkier for an equivalent warmth level, but continues to insulate reasonably well even when damp, which makes it the more forgiving, lower-risk choice for humid or unpredictable-weather trips, and for beginners who haven't yet developed the moisture-management habits that down really rewards.

Ground Insulation Is a Separate System — and Frequently Overlooked

A sleeping bag's rating generally assumes it's paired with adequate ground insulation from a sleeping pad; heat loss to the ground beneath you can be substantial, and an inadequate pad can leave you cold even in a bag rated well below the actual temperature. As a general guide, look for a sleeping pad R-value of at least 2 for mild summer conditions, 4+ for shoulder-season use, and 6+ for genuine alpine conditions — and note that pad R-values are additive if you layer pads, which is a legitimate way to boost cold-weather insulation without buying a single very high R-value pad.

Bag Shape and Efficiency

Mummy-shaped bags (tapered, closely fitted) minimise the internal air space your body needs to warm, which improves thermal efficiency for a given amount of insulation — this is a genuine part of why mummy bags achieve warmer ratings at lower weight than rectangular bags of similar fill. The trade-off is reduced room to move and, for some people, a more confining feel. Rectangular bags sacrifice some thermal efficiency for more room and versatility (some unzip fully to use as a blanket), which suits car camping in milder conditions better than genuinely cold trips.

What to Actually Prioritise

Buy for the coldest realistic overnight temperature you expect on the trip, not the average — and lean toward the comfort rating, not the lower limit, particularly if you're a cold sleeper or new to how a specific bag performs for you. Pair the bag with an adequately rated sleeping pad, since the bag's rating alone doesn't tell the full story of how warm you'll actually be.
