Dry bags and waterproof cases get bought on the "waterproof" label alone far too often, when the actual protection level varies enormously between products carrying that same general claim. Here's what the ratings and construction details actually mean.
IP Ratings: What the Numbers Actually Cover
Waterproof electronics cases are often rated using the IP (Ingress Protection) scale — two digits, the first for dust resistance, the second for water resistance. For water resistance specifically:
- IPX4: Splash-resistant from any direction — adequate for light rain or spray, not for submersion.
- IPX6: Resistant to powerful water jets — a genuinely more robust rating, suitable for heavy rain and rough conditions, but still not intended for submersion.
- IPX7: Can withstand temporary submersion (typically up to 1 metre for around 30 minutes, per the standard) — this is the rating that actually matters if there's a real chance of the item going underwater, such as a boat capsize or a dropped item in a creek crossing.
- IPX8: Rated for longer or deeper submersion than IPX7, with the specific depth and duration varying by manufacturer testing — check the manufacturer's specific claim rather than assuming IPX8 always means the same thing across products, since the standard allows the manufacturer to specify their own tested depth/duration beyond the IPX7 baseline.
A case or bag marketed simply as "waterproof" without a stated IP rating is worth treating cautiously — the claim alone doesn't tell you whether it's splash-resistant or genuinely submersion-rated, and the difference matters a great deal if you're carrying it near or on water.
Roll-Top Dry Bags: How the Seal Actually Works
Roll-top dry bags rely on a fabric closure rolled down multiple times (generally at least three full rolls) and then clipped, which compresses trapped air out and creates a seal through the folded, compressed fabric layers rather than through a rigid seal like a case. The seal quality depends heavily on getting a proper multi-roll closure with the bag not overfilled — an overfilled bag makes it physically difficult to get enough rolls in before the buckle reaches the clip point, which meaningfully compromises the seal even with an otherwise well-made bag. This is a common, avoidable failure mode: buy a bag sized with genuine room to spare for proper rolling, not one sized to just barely fit your gear.
Material and Seam Construction
Welded seams (heat or radio-frequency bonded rather than stitched) avoid the needle holes that stitched-and-taped seams can be vulnerable to over time, and are generally the more reliable choice for genuine submersion use. Fabric denier (thickness/toughness rating) affects abrasion resistance — a higher denier fabric holds up better to being dragged over rocks or repeatedly loaded into a boat or vehicle, at some cost in weight and packed bulk. For rougher use (boat fishing, whitewater, general knock-about outdoor use), a heavier denier fabric is generally worth the weight trade-off over a lighter, more packable bag intended mainly for dry storage rather than abrasion resistance.
Hard Cases vs Soft Dry Bags
Hard waterproof cases (rigid shell, gasket seal, latch closures) offer genuine impact protection for sensitive electronics — cameras, phones, GPS units — in addition to water resistance, which a soft dry bag doesn't provide. Soft dry bags are lighter, more packable, and better suited to bulkier gear (clothing, sleeping bags) where impact protection isn't the relevant concern, just keeping contents dry. Choosing between them should be based mainly on what you're actually protecting — fragile electronics generally warrant a hard case; bulkier soft goods are better served by a dry bag.
Valve and Purge Features
Some dry bags include a one-way purge valve that lets you compress trapped air out after rolling and sealing, which reduces packed bulk and can make the seal more secure by removing excess air pressure inside the bag. This is a genuinely useful feature for packing efficiency on multi-day trips where space is at a premium, though it's not essential for basic day-use waterproofing.
What to Actually Prioritise
Match the IP or submersion rating to the real risk your gear faces — heavy rain and splash exposure need less than a genuine risk of full submersion, such as boat-based fishing or creek crossings. For dry bags specifically, buy a size with genuine spare capacity to allow a proper multi-roll seal rather than sizing tightly to your gear, and choose fabric denier based on how rough the actual use will be. For sensitive electronics, a hard case with a stated, genuine IPX7 or higher rating is worth the extra bulk over a soft dry bag alone.
